Old Salmon River is a 3.8-mile out-and-back hike on natural trail in the Zigzag Ranger District of Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon. The trail rises about 114 feet from a low of 1,427 feet to a high of 1,540 feet, and it is managed by the Forest Service. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Three Lynx show July and August highs in the upper 70s with only four or five wet days a month, while winter months bring highs in the low 40s and rain on 20 or more days. That station sits about 420 feet lower than the trail's high point, so expect it to run slightly cooler up top. Green Canyon Campground is just 0.2 miles away, and the Salmon River Slab climbing area is 0.4 miles off. Salmon Butte and the South Fork Salmon River are both within about 3 miles.
