Flag Mountain is a moderate out-and-back hike of about 3.8 miles in Oregon's Mt. Hood National Forest, within the Zigzag Ranger District. The trail starts at around 1,850 feet and climbs to a high point of 2,529 feet, with a total gain of 1,325 feet over the course of the round trip. The route is front-loaded, with the steepest stretch near the beginning, where the grade reaches 29%. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Government Camp show July and August highs around 70°F with only about four wet days a month. That station sits about 1,450 feet higher than the trail's start, so temperatures on the mountain run warmer than those figures. The hike takes about two hours. Tollgate campground is just 0.3 miles away, and the climbing area at The Swine (aka Enola Hill) is 0.7 miles off. Castle Canyon and Still Creek Campground lie about 1.5 and 2 miles away.
