Old Growth Trail is an easy hike in Oregon's Philomath Unit, about half a mile long and rising roughly 250 feet from a low point of 715 feet to a high of 868 feet. It's a short, low-effort outing that fits easily into a morning or afternoon of exploring the trails around Philomath. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. At a weather station about 5 miles away in Corvallis, typical July and August highs reach the low 80s with only three or so wet days a month, while winter brings highs in the upper 40s and rain on most days. The trail is a point-to-point route, and the steepest part comes about a third of the way in, with a 13% grade. Bikes and horses are not allowed, so plan on walking. New Growth Trail starts just 0.1 mile away, and Vineyard Mountain Trail is about 0.4 mile off. Alpha Trail is under a mile away, and Soap Creek, a canoeing spot, lies about 5 miles out.
