Lookout Mountain is a hard hike in the Barlow Ranger District of Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service. The trail is about 6.6 miles long, with a total climb of 966 feet, and it is an out-and-back route that starts at roughly 4,600 feet and reaches a high point of about 5,390 feet. The climb is front-loaded, with the steepest stretch at about 2.6 miles in, where the grade reaches 15%. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Government Camp show July and August highs around 70°F with only about four wet days a month, while winter brings highs in the mid-30s and rain on most days. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the mountain run cooler. The Eightmile Loop Trail #496 starts just 0.4 miles away, and Pebble Ford campground and the Bulo Point climbing area are both about 1.8 miles off. For paddling, the East Fork Hood River is about 4.3 miles away.
