Burnt Lake South is a moderate out-and-back hike in Oregon's Mt. Hood National Forest, within the Zigzag Ranger District. The trail is about 5 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 1,786 feet, and it starts at roughly 3,700 feet, rising to a high point of about 4,800 feet. The steepest stretch comes around the 2.3-mile mark, where the grade reaches about 28 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Government Camp weather station show July and August highs around 70°F with only about four wet days a month, while winter months bring highs in the mid-30s and rain on most days. The hike takes about 2.5 hours. The Zigzag River is about 1.4 miles away, and the West Zigzag Trail #789 and Devil's Tie Trail #767 are each about 1.5 miles off. Camp Creek campground sits about 2.1 miles away.
