Big Tree is an easy out-and-back hike in the Powers Ranger District of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forests in southwest Oregon, managed by the Forest Service. The trail is about 1.5 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 693 feet, and it starts at roughly 708 feet, reaching a high point of about 1,166 feet. The climb is front-loaded, with the steepest stretch at the start, where the grade reaches about 46 percent. The trail is natural-surface and not accessible, and it does not allow bikes or horses. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Powers show July and August highs around 79 to 80°F with only two or three wet days a month, while winter months bring highs in the low 50s and rain on most days. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the route run cooler. Elk Creek Falls is just 0.1 mile away. Myrtle Grove campground is about 2 miles off, and the South Fork Coquille River and Buck Creek campground are both within about 4 miles.
