Peninsula Campground sits on a large chunk of land that extends into Olallie Lake in Oregon's Olallie Lake Scenic Area, within the Clackamas River Ranger District of Mt. Hood National Forest. The Forest Service manages the land, and the campground is the largest on Olallie Lake, which is a large, high-elevation lake bordered in part by the Warm Springs Reservation. The site is part of a cluster of campgrounds and roads around Olallie Lake, including Horseshoe Lake Campground and Skyline Rd. These were damaged in the Lionshead Fire and a subsequent winter storm blowdown and will not reopen this year. Peninsula Campground itself is the only one of the three that remains open. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Santiam Junction, which sits about 1,200 feet lower than the lake, show July and August highs around 76°F with lows near 42°F. Winter is cold, with January highs around 38°F and lows near 24°F. Vault toilets are the only amenity at the campground, and a fee is charged. Paddlers can also look to the South Fork North Fork Breitenbush River, about 3.5 miles off.
