China Hat is a Forest Service campground in the Bend/Fort Rock Ranger District of Oregon's Deschutes National Forest. It sits in the high desert country of central Oregon, and the nearest town is Bend, about 24 miles away. The site has no fees, and the only amenity is vault toilets. That makes it a simple base for an overnight stay in the backcountry, with no need to plan around a fee or a full service station. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Brothers run to highs around 82°F in July and 81°F in August, with lows in the mid-40s. Winter is cold, with January highs near 37°F and lows around 18°F. Several trails lie within about 8 miles, including the 14 Trail Head, the Cinder Cone Trail and the Crater Rim Trail 3957. For another place to camp, Cinder Hill is about 9 miles away.
