Chewaucan Crossing is a Forest Service campground on the Chewaucan River in the Paisley Ranger District of the Fremont-Winema National Forest, about 20 minutes south of Paisley, Oregon. It sits right on the river, and the Chewaucan Crossing Trailhead within the campground gives access to Fremont National Recreation Trail #160, a multi-use route that leads north to Yamsay Mountain and south to Cox Pass. A pedestrian bridge crosses the river and links to the trail. The site is a high desert, pine and juniper setting with five campsites, each having a picnic table and fire ring. Amenities include a vault toilet, parking, and trailer turnaround. No fees are required, but there is no potable water. Visitors must pack plenty of water and remember to "pack it in, pack it out." Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Paisley show July highs around 85°F with lows near 49°F, while winter highs sit in the low 40s. Nearby options include Marster Spring and Jones Crossing Forest Camp, both under a mile away. Hikers can also head to the Hanan Trail, about 5 miles off, or Withers Lake Loop Trail, roughly 7 miles away.
