Bolan Lake Campground is a Forest Service site in the Wild Rivers Ranger District of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forests, about 12 miles from the community of Illinois Valley in southern Oregon. It sits along the shores of Bolan Lake, a 12-acre lake high above the valley floor. The campground has 12 campsites set in a dispersed area, each with a picnic table and fire pit. Conifers provide shade in the summer, and wildflowers are a highlight of the early season. The Bolan Lake Trail #1245 starts within the campground and leads to the old fire lookout on Bolan Peak. The lookout is available for rent, and reservations must be made at recreation.gov. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from the Sexton Summit weather station, about 40 miles away and well below the lake, show July and August highs around 77°F with only about two wet days. Winter is cold and snowy, so plan for a trip in spring or summer. The closest neighbors include Bolan Lake and Kings Saddle, both under a mile away. Bolan Mountain Lookout is about half a mile off, and Tanner Lake is roughly 2.4 miles away.
