Wsm Eq - 1003 is a hard, out-and-back hike in the Choctaw Ranger District of Oklahoma's Ouachita National Forest, about 11.5 miles long with a total elevation gain and loss of 1,787 feet. The route starts at about 830 feet and climbs to a high point of 989 feet, and the steepest stretch comes around mile 3.3, where the grade reaches 20%. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run from highs of about 72°F in April to 76°F in October, while July and August average highs near 93°F. That station sits roughly 460 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the route run somewhat cooler. The trip takes about 4.5 hours. Cedar Lake and Old Pine both lie within about a third of a mile, and the Winding Stair campground is about 4.2 miles away. For paddling, the Kiamichi River is about 9.2 miles off.
