Practice Wall is a climbing area in North Carolina, about a mile from the town of Mountain View. It sits among several other climbing areas and hiking trails, with Hidden Wall and David's Castle (backside) both within about a tenth of a mile, so it works well as a base for exploring the cluster. The area is a mixed-style crag, with 15 routes that run from about 5.5 up to 5.14-. The mix of styles includes mixed, trad and sport, and the hardest of the named routes is Six Finger Man at 5.14-, a trad climb. Other routes on record include So It Goes, a trad 5.8+ first climbed by Shane and Sean Cobourn in the 1980s, and Klingon Traverse at 5.12. For timing, spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Gastonia show October highs around 74°F and April highs around 74°F, while July averages a high of 91°F. That station sits about 725 feet lower than the wall, so temperatures on the rock run cooler. Close by, the Backside Trail and Rocktop Trail offer hiking within about a quarter mile. Paddlers can head roughly 5.5 miles to South Fork Crowders Creek in South Carolina.
