The out-and-back trip runs about 8.9 miles, with a moderate climb of 346 feet from the start at 1,775 feet to the high point at 1,949 feet. The steepest stretch comes early, at about 0.33 miles in, with a 7% grade. Winter is the natural season for this route. Typical averages from the nearby Newcomb weather station show January highs around 26°F and lows near 4°F, while July highs reach about 77°F.
