The Mamakating O&W Rail Trail is a short, flat ride in New York's Town of Mamakating, on city land managed as part of the Town of Mamakating Land. The trail is an out-and-back route of about 1.5 miles, with almost no climb at all, and it is rated easy. The high point is about 542 feet, and the low point is about 532 feet, so the entire trip passes within a 10-foot elevation range. The trail is close to the D&H Canal Linear Park Towpath Trail, which is about a tenth of a mile away. The Wurtsboro Ridge State Forest Upper O&W Rail Trail and the Lower O&W Rail Trail are each about 0.7 miles off. Sandburg Creek, a paddling spot, lies about 5 miles away. For comfortable weather, late spring through early fall works best. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Middletown show May highs around 70°F and September highs around 73°F. That station sits a few hundred feet lower than the trail, so temperatures on the rail trail run slightly cooler. Dogs are allowed as long as they are leashed.
