Photo: christinejwarner, CC BY 2.0 (via Flickr)Stony Brook is an easy hike in Harriman State Park in New York, managed by State Park and Recreation. The route is about 1.9 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 204 feet and a total loss of 312 feet, so it works well as a short outing or a link between other trails in the park. The trail starts at about 586 feet and reaches a high point of 747 feet before descending. The steepest stretch comes early, around 0.19 miles in, with a grade of about 13 percent. Bikes are not allowed on this route. For comfortable weather, late spring and early fall are the best bets. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show May highs around 71°F and September highs around 76°F, with July the warmest month at about 84°F. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the higher ground run cooler. Several other trails lie close by, including Reeves Brook Trail at 0.7 miles and Raccoon Brook Hills Trail and Kakiat Trail at about 0.9 miles. Climbers can find Radical Books about 1.9 miles away.
