Carriage is an easy 0.9-mile hike in New York's Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve, where it crosses the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The route is short and low, rising from about 646 feet to 648 feet, with a total gain of 116 feet. It is a point-to-point walk rather than a loop, and the steepest section comes at about 0.69 miles, where the grade reaches 10%. The hike is an easy addition to a day spent exploring the preserve and the Appalachian Trail in this corner of the Highlands. The nearest town is West Point, and the trail is managed by State Park and Recreation. For comfortable weather, late spring and early fall are the best bets. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at West Point show May highs around 72°F and September highs around 76°F. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the ridge run a little cooler. Several other hikes start close by. White Rock is about 0.4 miles away, the Sugarloaf Trail about a mile, and Castle Rock Trail about 1.3 miles. Climbers can find Storm King Mountain roughly 6 miles off.
