Porvenir Canyon is a climbing area in the Pecos Wilderness, part of the Pecos-Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest in New Mexico. The Forest Service manages the land, and the canyon sits within designated wilderness. The climbing here is alpine, with eight routes spread across a range of grades from 5.6 to 5.12b. Among them are Andouille Arete at 5.6, Brass in Pocket at 5.12b, and La Llorona at 5.11. The routes are all alpine in style. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Gascon, NM, show May highs around 65°F and September highs around 69°F, while July and August bring the most wet days, about 12 each month. That station sits roughly 1,300 feet below the canyon, so temperatures up high run cooler. The Lower Slabs and Las Vegas / El Porvenir climbing areas are both within a mile. For an overnight stay, El Porvenir campground is about 2 miles away, and the Hollinger hike is about 2 miles off.
