Upper Main Diamond Trail #40 is a hard hike in the Aldo Leopold Wilderness, part of the Black Range Ranger District of Gila National Forest in New Mexico. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is an out-and-back that covers about 36 miles with a total elevation gain of 1,767 feet. The route starts at a low point of about 6,447 feet and climbs to a high of about 9,525 feet. The trail is long and steep, and the climb is one way. Plan for a full day or more on foot, with plenty of time to reach the top and return. Several other trails sit close by. Circle Seven Trail #106 and Spring Mountain Trail #67 are each about 0.1 mile away, and Burnt Canyon Trail #69 is about 1.4 miles off. Fisherman Canyon lies roughly 2.3 miles away.
