Tecolote is an easy out-and-back hike in the Sandia Ranger District of Cibola National Forest in New Mexico, about 2.7 miles long with a total elevation gain of 202 feet. The trailhead is named Tecolote Trailhead, and the Forest Service manages the land. The route starts at about 8,627 feet and climbs to a high point of 8,823 feet. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows bikes, so it works for hikers and riders alike. The trail is open from April 1 to November 30. That makes it a comfortable choice for a late spring or early fall outing, when the weather is typically milder than in winter. Several other destinations sit close by. The Challenge Trail, a cross-country ski route, is about 0.4 miles away, and the Tree Spring and King of the Mountain hikes are within a mile. Climbers can find Pino Wall about 1.7 miles off.
