Hermits Peak is a hard hike in the Pecos-Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest in northern New Mexico, about 2 miles from the small community of El Porvenir. The trail is an out-and-back that climbs from a low point of about 7,500 feet to a high of roughly 10,170 feet, with a total elevation gain of about 3,200 feet over a route of about 18 miles. The trail is on natural surface and allows horses, but not bikes. That makes it a practical choice for riders heading out from El Porvenir, where the El Porvenir campground sits just 0.1 mile away. Several other destinations lie close by. The Beaver Creek and Las Dispensas hikes are both about 0.1 mile from the trail, and the Ev Long campground is about a mile away. Climbers can find the Lower Slabs about 1.6 miles off.
