Red Maple Trail is a 4.9-mile point-to-point hike in Stokes State Forest in northern New Jersey, managed by the State Department of Natural Resources. It is rated easy, with a one-way elevation gain of 764 feet. The trail runs from a low point of 733 feet to a high of 1,142 feet, and its steepest stretch comes at about 3.7 miles in, where the grade reaches 41 percent. The route is back-loaded, meaning the climb is steeper in the second half. Snow is typical from December through February, and typical averages from a nearby weather station show September highs around 74°F and lows near 51°F, making it a comfortable month for a visit. Bikes and horses are both allowed. The Steffen Trail starts just 0.1 mile away, and Jacobs Ladder Trail, Acropolis Trail and Stoll Trail are all within about a mile and a half.
