Old Mount Rose Highway is a short, easy out-and-back route in Nevada's Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, managed by the Forest Service. The trip starts and ends at nearly the same elevation, with a total climb of about 224 feet, so it works well as a brief warm-up or a stop on the way to other trails in the area. The route is front-loaded, with the steepest stretch at about 0.29 miles in, where the grade reaches 8 percent. The high point is 8521 feet, and the low point is 8344 feet. At 1.4 miles long, the outing is short enough to fit in with other stops close by. Several other destinations sit within a short distance. The Upper Tyrolian Bypass and the Upper Tyrolian Trail are both mountain biking routes about a tenth of a mile away, and the Tyrolian Downhill hike is about 0.2 miles off. For an overnight stay, Mt. Rose Campground is roughly 2.3 miles from the highway.
