Western Nevada is a climbing area in Nevada, managed by the Bureau of Reclamation and located about 9 miles from the town of Parran. It is a small, compact area with only three routes, so it works well as a short stop rather than a full-day destination. The climbing here is a mix of trad and sport styles, with grades ranging from 5.8 to 5.10a. Two of the routes are traditional: Un-named Great Northern Nevada Crack at 5.8 and South Spring Arete at 5.9. Lava Lightning is the sport route at 5.10a. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Fallon show May highs around 75°F and October highs around 70°F, while July and August average in the low 90s. The California Emigrant Trail (Truckee River Route) is about 1.6 miles away, and the Carson River, a canoeing spot, is about 6.2 miles away.
