Soldier Basin is a 9.1-mile out-and-back hike in Nevada's Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, within the Mountain City-Ruby Mountains-Jarbidge Ranger District. The trail rises from a low point of 6,787 feet to a high of 9,482 feet, a climb of 2,253 feet, and is rated expert. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trailhead is named Soldier Basin Trailhead, which is open year-round. The route is natural-surfaced and allows horses, but not bikes. That makes it a ride for riders on horseback rather than on two wheels. The trail is a long, steep climb, and the high point sits well above the starting point. For a full day on foot, plan on time to cover the distance and the elevation gain. Nearby, John Day is about 1.7 miles away, and North Fork Cold Creek and Ross Creek are each about 2.2 miles off. Mountain bikers can head to Hidden Lakes, roughly 2.5 miles away.
