Hyalite Canyon is a climbing area in the Bozeman Ranger District of Custer Gallatin National Forest in Montana, managed by the Forest Service. It sits along the network of Fr 62 Upper Hyalite Creek Road, with several campgrounds clustered within a third of a mile, making it an easy base for a longer stay in the district. The climbing here is varied, with seven routes on record. Ice climbers will find Flashover at 5.5 and Silken Slot at 5.7, and the alpine Unknown Route adds a higher-style challenge. The route In Through the Out Door is a trad climb at 5.7. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run to highs around 78°F in July, and the station sits roughly 800 feet lower than the canyon, so temperatures up here run cooler. Winters are cold, with January highs near 30°F. Grotto Falls, about 0.8 miles away, offers a hike, and the Hyalite Canyon Trail, a cross-country ski route, is about half a mile off. Swamp Rock and The Fins are climbing areas roughly 3.6 and 3.7 miles away.
