Sheldon Mountain A is a hard hike in the Libby Ranger District of Montana's Kootenai National Forest, about 6.7 miles long with an elevation gain of 1,184 feet. The trail is natural-surfaced and open to both horses and bikes, and it makes an out-and-back route from a low point of about 2,990 feet to a high of about 4,397 feet. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Libby show July and August highs around 78°F with lows near 40°F and only about six wet days a month. That station sits roughly 950 feet lower than the summit, so temperatures on top run cooler. Several other routes start close by. Sheldon Mountain E, a mountain biking trail, is about 0.2 miles away, and the Sheldon Mountain Tie J hike is about 0.3 miles off. Timberlane Campground, about 3.3 miles away, offers a place to stay, and Whoop Up, a hike about 0.7 miles away, makes an easy addition to the day.
