Half Moon is a hard, 9.5-mile out-and-back hike in Montana's Scapegoat Wilderness, within the Rocky Mountain Ranger District of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. The trail rises from about 6,276 feet to 7,611 feet, with an elevation gain of 1,163 feet, and it is managed by the Forest Service. The trail is natural-surfaced, and it is open to horses. Bikes are not allowed, and the route is not accessible. It is a year-round trip, so you can plan around any season, but the high point makes it a serious outing. The climb is a single stretch from the low to the high point. Two other hikes sit close by: Petty Crown, about 1.6 miles away, and Green Fork, about 1.9 miles away. Double Falls Campground is about 4.4 miles off, and the Telephone Creek mountain biking area is about 2 miles away.
