Gergen is a 7-mile out-and-back hike in the Tally Lake Ranger District of Montana's Flathead National Forest, managed by the Forest Service. The trail rises from about 4,127 feet to a high point of 4,978 feet, with an elevation gain of 879 feet. It is a hard route, and the trail surface is natural, so plan for a rugged outing. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Polebridge weather station show July and August highs around 81 to 82°F, with lows near 40°F. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the route run cooler. The trail is open year-round. Bikes are allowed, and the route is not accessible. Corduroy lies just 0.3 miles away, and Johnson Peak is about 3.4 miles off. For an overnight base, Star Meadows Guard Station is about 7 miles away, and Tally Lake Campground is about 8.3 miles away.
