Dolly Varden-Pentagon is a hard hike in the Great Bear Wilderness, part of the Spotted Bear Ranger District of Flathead National Forest in northwest Montana. The route is an out-and-back that climbs from about 4,800 feet to roughly 7,000 feet, with a total elevation gain of about 2,100 feet over a round trip of about 20.5 miles. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is natural-surfaced and open year-round. Horses are allowed, but bikes are not, and the trail is not accessible. The climb is long and steep, so plan on a full day or more. Several other hikes sit within a few miles, including West Side Big River, Roaring-Argosy and Porter Creek. The Middle Fork Flathead River, a paddling route, is about 9 miles away.
