Big Salmon Creek is a 20-mile out-and-back hike in Montana's Bob Marshall Wilderness, within the Flathead National Forest. The trail rises from about 4,600 feet to roughly 6,600 feet, and the climb is rated hard. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is natural-surface, with horses allowed and bikes not. The trip is a long one, and the high point sits well above the low. Plan for a full day, and know that the trail is not accessible. It is open year-round. Sapphire Lakes lies just 0.7 miles away, and Sapphire - Smokey is about 1.5 miles off. For an overnight base, Owl Creek Cabin is 2.3 miles away and Holland Lake Campground is 3.9 miles away.
