Neither lake is a destination fishery in the way that Cheney Reservoir draws regional attention, but for someone based in or passing through Goddard who wants a rod in the water without a long drive, both are practical choices. Kansas requires a valid state fishing license for anyone 16 and older, and Sedgwick County Park charges a separate daily entrance fee for Lake Afton. Early morning and the hour before sunset are consistently the most productive windows, especially in summer when midday heat pushes fish into deeper, cooler water.
Lake Afton is a warm-water lake, so you're primarily looking at largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, and bluegill. Catfish are particularly consistent here, especially on summer evenings with cut bait or stink bait fished on the bottom.
