Timber Edge is a short, easy hike in Castle Rock State Park in Illinois, managed by the State Department of Natural Resources. The route is a point-to-point walk of about 0.4 miles, with a total elevation gain of 11 feet and a total loss of 79 feet. The steepest stretch comes early, at about 0.06 miles in, with an 8% grade. The most comfortable months for a visit are typically late spring and early fall. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Dixon run from highs around 71°F in May to about 75°F in September, with lows in the 50s. The hike takes about half an hour. Heather Valley and Wildlife Viewing both lie about 0.4 miles away, and Forest Ridge is about 0.7 miles off. For a longer outing, Big Jump Prairie is roughly 4.5 miles away.
