This is an easy out-and-back hike in Shawnee National Forest's Hidden Springs Ranger District, in southern Illinois. The trail is 2.3 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 74 feet, and it's managed by the Forest Service. It's a short, low-effort outing. The route rises from a low point of 573 feet to a high point of 649 feet, with the steepest stretch at about 0.27 miles in, where the grade reaches 7 percent. The trail's natural surface works well for hikers, and horses are allowed. Bikes are not. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run from highs around 70°F in April to about 71°F in October, while July highs average 88°F. The hike sits close to Jackson Hole, about half a mile away, and Monument, about 0.7 miles away. Redbud Campground - Bell Smith Springs is 2.2 miles off, and the Manky Alcove climbing area is 2.8 miles away.
