Trail D is a short, easy mountain biking ride in the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, managed by the Forest Service. The route is only about 0.4 miles long, with a total elevation gain of about 122 feet. It's an out-and-back, starting and ending at a low point of about 4,085 feet and reaching a high point of about 4,147 feet. The climb is back-loaded, so the steepest stretch comes at the end of the route. The steepest grade is about 9% at about 0.11 miles from the start. The small elevation change makes this a quick stop rather than a long ride. For comfortable weather, late summer is the warmest time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Plummer put July highs around 81°F and August highs around 83°F. That station sits about 1,200 feet lower than the trail, so temperatures on the trail run cooler. Trail 29 "Big Trees" is about 0.3 miles away, and Cave Trail is about 0.7 miles away for more mountain biking. Trail C is a hike about 0.6 miles away. Mokins Bay Campground is about 4.5 miles away for an overnight stay.
