Trail Canyon is a hard hike in Idaho's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, within the Ashton/Island Park Ranger District. The route is an out-and-back of about 13.7 miles, with a one-way elevation gain of 1,608 feet, taking you from a low point of 5,778 feet to a high of 7,446 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is natural-surfaced, with horses and bikes allowed. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Island Park weather station, which sits about 1,150 feet lower, show July and August highs around 77°F with lows in the low 40s. Winter is harsh, with January highs near 27°F and lows around 6°F. The trail is open year-round, and the Warm River Cabin and the Moose Creek hike both sit about 0.1 mile away. Camp Ridge is about 1.7 miles off, and Grandview Campground is about 3.8 miles away.
