Sulphur - West Elk is a hard hike in the Cascade Ranger District of Idaho's Boise National Forest, about 6.8 miles long with a one-way elevation gain of 1,795 feet. The trail is managed by the Forest Service and is an out-and-back route that climbs from a low point of about 6,962 feet to a high of about 8,250 feet. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows both horses and bikes, so it works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. That makes it a flexible option for a longer trip on foot or on horseback. Several other hikes sit within a few miles, including Tyndall - Sulphur about 1.7 miles away and Warm Lake / Deadwood about 2.4 miles away. For an overnight base, Deer Flat Campground is about 8 miles off.
