Smithie Fork is a hard hike in the Lost River Ranger District of Idaho's Salmon-Challis National Forest, about 6.7 miles long with a one-way elevation gain of 973 feet. The trail is managed by the Forest Service and is an out-and-back route that starts at a low point of about 8,088 feet and climbs to roughly 9,123 feet. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows both horses and bikes, so it works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. That makes it a flexible option for a day on foot or on horseback. Several other trails lie within a few miles, including Slide Creek and Timber Creek, each about 2.5 miles away, and Lake Creek at about 2.8 miles. For an overnight stay, Timber Creek Campground is about 4.2 miles off.
