Whitney Portal Buttress is a climbing area in California's Inyo National Forest, within the Mt. Whitney Ranger District. The Forest Service manages the surrounding land, and the buttress sits among several other climbing areas, camps and routes, all within a short distance of one another. The climbing here is largely traditional, with eight routes spread across a range of grades from 5.10b to 5.12a. Beckey-Callis, first climbed by Fred Beckey and Pat Callis in 1967, is a classic 5.10. Tanager (5.10b) and Gangway (5.12a) are other standouts. The mixed style is used only on one route, so most climbers here will find trad their main focus. The area is close to Mount Whitney, and the Whitney Trailhead Walk In Campground and Lone Pine Group Campground both sit within half a mile. The Beach, Right Side and Poolhall Wall are other climbing areas nearby.
