The Beach, Right Side is a climbing area in California's Inyo National Forest, within the Mt. Whitney Ranger District and about a mile from the town of Whitney Portal. The Forest Service manages the land, and the spot sits among a cluster of other climbing and hiking destinations, so it works well as a base for a longer day in the Whitney area. The area holds nine routes, with trad climbing making up the bulk of them and one sport route. Most of the climbs sit in the 5.11 to 5.12 range, with Crystal Voyage at 5.11b and Riptide at 5.12b as two of the most representative. Among the routes are several named for their own style, including Flotsam and Message In a Bottle, both 5.12a trad routes. Assume the Position is the sport route, at 5.11d. The surrounding area offers more to do. Whitney Trailhead Walk In Campground is about a tenth of a mile away, and Lone Pine Group Campground is roughly half a mile off. Climbers can also head to Candlelight Buttress and Poolhall Wall, both just 0.1 mile away.
