Lion Meadow is a hard hike in California's Golden Trout Wilderness, within the Western Divide Ranger District of Sequoia National Forest. The route is an out-and-back that climbs from about 6,100 feet to about 9,165 feet, a total gain of 4,510 feet over a distance of about 33.4 miles. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is natural-surfaced and open year-round. Horses are allowed, but bikes are not. That makes the trip a natural fit for a pack animal, and the route's length and elevation make it a serious commitment rather than a day hike. The trail is open all year, and the surrounding wilderness makes it a destination for those who plan to spend several days in the area. Quaking Aspen campground sits about 7 miles away, and the Little Kern River offers paddling about 4.6 miles off. Climbers can head to Hermit Spires, about 5.5 miles away, and the Doe Meadow hike is about 3 miles from the trail.
