Green Mountain is a hard hike on the Forest Service land of the Big Bar Ranger District in California's Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The route is 40 miles long, starting at about 5,055 feet and climbing to 6,963 feet at the summit. The total gain is 5,540 feet, so the climb is significant and best approached with careful planning. The trail is an out-and-back, and the natural surface makes it a rugged route. Horses are allowed, but bikes are not. The trip is open year-round, which gives flexibility for timing the weather. Several other destinations sit within a short drive. French Creek is about 2.3 miles away, and Big French Creek offers canoeing at about 2.9 miles. Denny Campground is roughly 5.7 miles off, and the New River is about 6 miles away for more paddling.
