Deer is a 4-mile out-and-back hike in the Western Divide Ranger District of Sequoia National Forest, about 3.4 miles from the town of Cedar Slope, California. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is rated moderate with a one-way elevation gain of 320 feet, from a low point of about 7,700 feet to a high of about 7,959 feet. The trail has a natural surface, and bikes are allowed. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the Lodgepole weather station, about 31.5 miles away, show July and August highs around 76°F with lows in the mid-40s and only a couple of wet days a month. Winter brings highs in the upper 30s and frequent snow days. Quaking Aspen campground sits about a mile away, and the Clicks Creek hike and Hermit Spires climbing area are each about 1.2 miles off. The Little Kern River, about 5 miles away, offers canoeing.
