Shafter is a Forest Service campground in the Goosenest Ranger District of Klamath National Forest in California, about 3 miles from Orr Lake. It sits beside lush meadows that hold wildflowers early in the season, and the S.P. railroad tracks pass right by, so campers can sometimes watch trains go by. The campground has vault toilets, and a fee is charged for stays. The most comfortable stretch for a visit runs from late spring through early fall. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show June highs around 76°F and September highs near 78°F, with July and August warming to about 86°F. Butte Creek, regularly stocked with rainbow and brown trout, offers good fishing early in the season. Orr Lake Group Campround and the Orr Lake Trail are both about 3 miles away, and the Long Loop hike is roughly 10 miles off.
