Romero is a hard out-and-back hike in Arizona's Pusch Ridge Wilderness, part of the Santa Catalina Ranger District of Coronado National Forest. The trail runs about 12.4 miles, with a total elevation gain of 3,208 feet, from a low point of 2,831 feet to a high of 6,036 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is natural-surfaced and open to horses. The most comfortable months for a visit are typically May and September, when typical averages from a nearby weather station at Mt Lemmon Willow Canyon run to highs around 71°F and 75°F. That station sits about 1,000 feet higher than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the route run a little warmer. The trailhead is at the Romero Ruin Trail parking area, and the route is open year-round. The Sutherland Trail and Bridle Trail both lie within about 1.5 miles, and the Mount Lemmon (Santa Catalina Mountains) climbing area is about 2 miles away. For an overnight base, Sabino Canyon Recreation Area Cactus Ramada 1 and 2 are about 8 miles off.
