Bonito Campground sits 18 miles northeast of Flagstaff, Arizona, within the Flagstaff Ranger District of Coconino National Forest. It sits at about 6,900 feet, close to Sunset Crater/Wupatki National Monument. The campground is named for the Bonito Lava Flow, a volcanic remnant that oozed across the high desert plain about 900 years ago. That lava flow, now frozen in place, is one of many volcanic features that give the area its otherworldly look. Vault toilets are the only facility listed for the site, and a fee is charged for stays. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show May highs around 70°F and September highs around 75°F, while July and August bring the most wet days. O'leary campground is just 0.3 miles away, and the Lava's Edge Trail and Lenox Crater Trail are both within about a mile and a half. Lockett Meadow Campground is roughly 4.6 miles off.
