Hilda

Hilda is a small, sparsely populated unincorporated community in Mason County, Texas, situated along RM 783 roughly midway between the towns of Mason and Doss. German immigrants who settled the Fisher–Miller Land Grant territory established it around 1852, making it one of the earlier agricultural settlements in this part of the state. Those early residents supported themselves through farming and ranching, and before Fort Mason was established in 1858, a trip to Fredericksburg was required for basic supplies.

Visitors today will find little in the way of historic infrastructure — Hilda never grew into a formal town, and the population remains very thin. The most tangible sign of continuing community life is an active church still serving local residents. For those drawn to quiet, rural Texas landscapes and the layered history of Hill Country German settlement, Hilda makes a worthwhile stop along a scenic drive, though expectations should be modest.
