Bettina

In 1847, a group of German intellectuals known as the Darmstadt Forty established a settlement along the Llano River in what is now Llano County, Texas. The colony was part of the broader Adelsverein effort to place German immigrants on the Fisher–Miller Land Grant, and its founders gave it the name Bettina, honoring German artist and social activist Bettina von Arnim. It was also referred to as the Darmstaedter Kolonie and stood as one of five communities the Darmstadt Forty attempted to build in the region.

The settlement did not survive, and today absolutely nothing remains of it on the ground. Visitors drawn by the history will find no ruins, markers, or structural traces — only the Llano River landscape where the colony once stood. This is a destination for historically curious travelers who understand they are visiting a site defined entirely by absence.
