About Hembrie

Hembrie is a ghost town in Crockett County, Texas, that took its name from the family of the area's first postmaster. For a period it was also referred to as Nix's Ranch, reflecting the ranching character of the surrounding landscape. A post office operated here from 1890 until 1911, and a school served the local community during roughly that same era before both eventually closed.

Today Hembrie is essentially a place on a map rather than a place on the ground. Visitors should expect little to no standing structure, and the experience is one of open West Texas terrain rather than a walkable historic district. It suits those drawn to quiet, off-the-beaten-path history and the wide rural scenery of Crockett County.
