About Dewees

Dewees is a ghost town in Wilson County, Texas, located a short distance southwest of the small community of Poth. Its origins trace to the years immediately following the Civil War, when two brothers — John Oatman Dewees and Thomas Dewees — established operations in the area and built a cattle enterprise of remarkable scale. The Dewees brothers grew into highly successful cattlemen, moving tens of thousands of Texas Longhorn cattle out of the region each year.

Today Dewees exists in name more than in form. Visitors drawn to the site will find a quiet rural landscape typical of south-central Texas rather than preserved structures or an interpretive site. It is a destination best suited to history enthusiasts comfortable with the reality that many Texas ghost towns leave little visible trace on the ground.
