Withington Wilderness

Withington Wilderness is an 18,827-acre federally protected wilderness area in New Mexico managed by the Forest Service. It is primitive backcountry where motorized and mechanized travel are prohibited—no roads, vehicles, or mountain bikes are allowed. The landscape offers hiking and backpacking in a non-motorized setting where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience.

Visitors should expect true wilderness conditions and be prepared for Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, camp away from water sources, and minimize impact on the landscape. Access requires foot travel only. The wilderness is best visited during warmer months when weather is stable, though conditions vary by elevation and season. Check current conditions with the Forest Service before planning your trip, as wilderness areas can experience closures or restrictions.
